Route 66 - The Mother Road ( Entering Oklahoma to Tulsa, OK)

As I left Kansas I drove into Oklahoma and enjoyed the long 386 miles. Well almost. I am still 60 miles give or take from Texas. I will write more later about now, but right now, I have to get us to Tulsa and then from Tusla to Clinton, Oklahoma.

The Dairy King is still in operation selling hamburgers and ice cream. Across the street is Allen's Filling station. It has been recently restored.

Mickey Mantles boyhood Home
I continued on enjoying the day and drove into Commerce, Oklahoma. The boyhood home of Mickey Mantle. He was later known as the " Commerce Comet".  The plaque in the picture will tell you a little history. Remember click on the picture and it will get bigger so you can read it. The white house picture was his house. The barn mentioned on the plaque is to the the right facing the house.

After leaving Mickey Mantles house and Commerce I got to drive on some of the Sidewalk Highways built in 1922 to 1937 before the alignment of old 66. The highyway is a 9 foot concrete base and curbs with asphalt. The highway expands to 12 feet at the curves and back to 9 feet on the straight aways.

I passed by several historic places still on the Route. Some places where closed or gone, but most still had the signs. Amazingly a lot of the small hotels are still operational.

No I didn't stop, but I passed the largest McDonald's in the US at 30,000 sq. feet. Believe it or not there is a bigger McDonalds in Beijing, China.

Still crossing over  more bridges passing places like the Top Hat, A bronze statue of Bunion Derby winner, another story. Finally coming into Tulsa finishing the day off with the giant ARK ( Animal Reptile Kingdom) and the Giant Blue Whale Swimming park.  The blue whale is 80 feet long and was an anniversity present.

It is about 11pm tonight so time to head to bed. Tomorrow night I will finish Oklahoma. If all goes right tomorrow I should be in western Texas and if I am lucky New Mexico. Texas is 182 miles across the top, but some fun places like the Bug ranch and the Cadillac Ranch.

Thanks everyone for the comments and emails. I am glad everyone is enjoying the pictures and even some of the stories. Good Night.
